They Went To The Bar During Work, And You’ll Be Jealous When You See Why

You didn’t sleep last night, you don’t remember what just happened in your staff meeting, and there’s a solid chance that you’ll snooze through your stop on the way home.

We’ve all been there. Adult life is rough, and some work days feel like they’ll never end. That’s why a few designers decided to conduct a social experiment by creating a getaway for hardworking people in Dubai.

The design-savvy gifts to mankind at Smarin came up with a project called “Let’s Take a Nap,” and the installation, which ran its course last month, only reinforced what many analysts have already concluded about the relationship between rest and productivity.

To most Americans, the idea of napping during work seems insane, but studies show that effective napping actually increases productivity.

Back in 2002, researchers at Harvard concluded that taking strategic, 30-minute naps between major tasks — or, say, halfway through a work day — actually increased mental clarity and alertness, which then contributed to an uptick in productivity.

So there, naysayers! Naps are where it’s at. The designers at Smarin didn’t build their Nap Bar with novelty in mind. They simply understand the value of rest and created accordingly.

While the installation was running, visitors lounged on pebble-inspired cushions, sipped herbal tea, listened to soothing music, and slept.

If you ask the folks at Smarin, napping is “a time of recovery anchored in a universal culture.”

The French design house carefully curated every element of the space to create a dark, soothing oasis that patrons could sneak into during lunch. The Nap Bar was a place that invited you to “have a break, to disconnect and recharge,” a representative writes.

While not a study in and of itself, the success of this project speaks volumes about the prioritization of physical and emotional wellbeing in the workplace. It’s not rocket science. When we feel better, we perform better. If you’re feeling frustrated about your productivity, just sleep on it.
